The Story
Please allow us to share a short story about Euclid. The “father of geometry” offered five postulates about angles and circles that became the basic building blocks of our understanding of the world through mathematics. However, he was not thrilled to use the fifth one. Why was he so sparing with the axiom that for any line and a point lying off that line, there is exactly one other line that goes through the point and never touches the first line?
It was long suspected that Euclid only wanted four postulates. He supposedly only added the “fifth wheel” because he failed to deduce it from the previous elegant four. For the following two thousand years, mathematicians have been looking for the missing proof “of the fifth using the previous four” as intensely as Arthur’s knights sought the Holy Grail. At the end of the nineteenth century, they concluded the opposite.
Unlike its four predecessors, the fifth postulate does not hold in all situations. A line and a point can create one parallel line only if the plane they are in is perfectly flat. That might not sound extraordinary, but actually, the world is full of uneven planes. Seamen navigate the round Earth, Einstein taught us that time-space was curved and the surface of the June sock model is now surely enveloping your lower extremity.
Is it possible that Euclid predicted the Theory of Relativity as well as the shape of your sock back in ancient Alexandria? Well, we do not know much about his life. What we are certain of, though, is that he would not refuse a good pair of socks made of bamboo, since those would come in perfectly handy on a hot sunny day.
Material
The lightness of the sock is attained by virtue of eighty percent bamboo viscose, five percent cotton yarn, and an equal measure of polyamide. The latter two serve to enhance the sock’s durability.
The remaining tenth is composed of Lycra and polypropylene. The former ensures the desired elasticity and offers antibacterial protection, whilst the latter lends the sock its admirable strength.
May your steps — and your thoughts — be ever light.
