The Story

Please allow us to lay this question at your feet: Since the argyle sock pattern relates to diamonds and, in many European languages, to the French word for square, “carreau”, is there also any relationship to cars? The both have key defining elements in the four corners, you know.

Unfortunately, the Celts who invented the word “carros” are no longer around to confirm our hypothesis. What we do know is that Ancient Romans were not strict with the four-ness of their vehicles and accepted any number of wheels higher than two. That does not apply to the modern Anglophone world, where a “car” most often has four wheels.

A medieval Latin scholar would argue that carts should only follow a “via carraria”, the road designated for them. In saying this Latin import out loud, you might surprise yourself with the similarity to the word “career”. The similarity is not coincidental and even extends to the word “caricature”, whose etymology relates to exceeding loads. So, do all car-based references relate to vehicles?

Nope. The word “caro” branches out to a different etymological destination to the French “carreau”, or square, which brings us to ancient Rome. Apparently, that is where all the roads and branches lead. Ancient Romans were very clear on this, though. “Quattuor” means four.

Well, it does seem like April Fool’s attempts to keep the chequered patterns in check are fair and square.

Material

Each sock has been crafted from combed cotton yarn, complemented by 10% polyamide, added to increase resistance against wear and tear.

The core of the sock is composed of Lycra and polypropylene, each of which accounts for 5%. The latter provides tensile strength, while the former ensures elasticity.
